Aviation companies have now started realizing worldwide environmental degradations by fuel emissions, which plays a major role in Global warming. Some efforts initiated on this front are admirable.
Now, Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic has come forward to reduce aviation emissions by towing planes to take-off areas. It is likely to start at London airports very shortly this month.
The aircrafts emit massive fuel when they arrive on runway for takeoff. Company says that new plan would save around ten minutes of engine functioning that is used for running before takeoff.
Virgin spokesman said in a statement: ‘Towing aircraft from a stand substantially reduces the amount of time they need to taxi with their engines running and reduces the time spent queuing before takeoff.’ In the first phase, company will start trialing at Heathrow and Gatwick using Boeing 747-400 planes.
Airlines are being pressurized by environmental philanthropists as the sudden surge in air travel has given way to the incessant release of greenhouse gases. The initiatives are good but I think airlines need to make some concrete measures and should come closer to find out long lasting solutions.
