Hamilton international Airport authorities have decided to enforce new taxes on the domestic passengers. Passengers who board flights post Jan 8 will require to pay $5 extra. Around $600,000 was expected to be collected from the levy.
Jerry Rickman chairman of Waikato Regional Airport Ltd. said:
The tax was necessary to cover interest costs associated with $15.5 million of capital expenditure on the new terminal.
Children under five and aircraft crew members will be exempt. Apart from this, 12 year old international passengers who travel to Australia in Freedom Air’s flights, are also exempt as they already face a $25 departure tax.
Other airports including Palmerton North have also increased taxes to $5 as earlier domestic passengers, five years and older paid $3 between 1992 and 2003.
