Location: Los Angeles International Airport
A one-month-old baby was put through an X-ray machine by the grandmother. The lady spoke little English and was traveling to Mexico. The confused woman had put the baby in a plastic bin used to scan carry on items.
Security screeners saw the baby only on the monitor as it just about started to pass through and pulled the bin out.
Previously in 1988, a baby in a car seat
This was an innocent mistake by an obviously inexperienced traveller,
The baby was checked for radiation damage at the nearby Centinela hospital and found to be okay.
Doctors cleared the child, finding that in the seconds the baby spent in the machine he would have received no more radiation than would naturally be absorbed from cosmic rays from space in a day.
Maybe the need of the hour is to have volunteers to help at busy airports where people can make bizarre mistakes.
