EU Emission Trading System incorporated international flights in and out of the EU in order to reduce the green house effects by levying new taxes on airlines. As per the new norms airlines will be abide by the rules by 2012.
Airlines will be able to buy rights to pollute if they exceed their targets. However, airlines oppose the move, arguing that plane emission contributes only one or two percent in overall global emissions while EU claims that rapidly increasing traffic in aviation industry is causing more harm to environment compared to any other type of pollution.
Industry watchers are anticipating that it will increase air tickets by 1.80 euro to 9 euros in its first phase.
America has made some apprehensions, saying that the process
will prove unworkable and will undercut rather than support international efforts to implement system improvement to manage the impact of aviation emissions.
It will not be implemented without the approval of non-EU participants, said an embassy representative.
